Usage concentration: In cosmetic formulations, the usual amount of kojic acid added is typically between 1% - 3%. For sensitive skin, it's recommended to start at a lower 0.5% - 1% to minimize the risk of skin irritation.
Dissolution method: Kojic acid is water-soluble and should be added into the water phase of the formula. To prevent clumping and ensure even distribution, the best method is to first dissolve it in propylene glycol (PG) or butylene glycol (recommended ratio: 1 part kojic acid : 2-3 parts glycol), stir until fully dissolved, and then add it to the formula.

 

Temperature and pH Control (Key Steps)
Addition temperature: Kojic acid easily oxidizes and degrades at high temperatures. Therefore, it must be added when the formula's temperature drops below 40°C (ideally between 25-40°C) to prevent loss of activity.
pH requirements: Kojic acid is most stable in acidic to neutral environments. The final pH of the formulation should be strictly controlled between 4.0 and 7.0 (ideally 4.0 - 6.0). If the pH falls outside this range, kojic acid may degrade, causing the product to darken, and in that case, the product should be discarded.

Suitable combinations: Kojic acid can be paired with brightening ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, and licorice extract to enhance brightening effects.
What to avoid: Avoid mixing kojic acid with strong acids (like lactic acid, AHA/BHA) or retinoids in the same formulation, as this can disrupt pH balance or cause severe skin irritation. Additionally, it's recommended not to use more than three active brightening ingredients in a formula.
