Structural characteristics of Cecropin A.
Cecropin A consists of 34 amino acids in a linear structure and contains multiple hydrophobic and charged amino acid residues, which confers it with the ability to form pores on the cell membrane. The N-terminus of Cecropin A is mainly composed of hydrophobic amino acids, while the C-terminus is rich in positively charged amino acids, and this zwitterionic distribution pattern helps the peptide interact with the anionic phospholipid head, which in turn penetrates the microbial cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak and ultimately lead to cell death.
