Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor VEGF is a potent pro-angiogenic factor, which can stimulate endothelial cell proliferation and survival, promote angiogenesis, and promote the increase of vascular permeability. VEGF is expressed in all vascularized tissues and plays an important role in normal and pathological angiogenesis. VEGF is essential during embryogenesis and regulates endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and survival. In adults, VEGF acts primarily on wound healing and the female reproductive cycle. Pathologically, it is involved in angiogenesis and vascular leakage of tumors. Circulating VEGF levels are associated with disease activity in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
