Melittin is the main component of bee venom. Melittin's amphotomian nature makes it an excellent model for detecting lipoprotein-protein interactions in cell membranes. Adade et al. found that melittin can kill the Trypanosoma cruzi parasite by inducing different cell death channels. Melittin is a PLA2 activator that stimulates the activity of low molecular weight PLA2 without increasing the activity of high molecular weight PLA2.
